Effects of Pain Management Program on Self-care Behavior, Pain Level and Severity of Osteoarthritis in Older Adult with Knee Osteoarthritis

The purpose of this quasi-experimental research was to study the effects of pain management program on self-care behavior, pain level and severity of osteoarthritis in older adult with knee osteoarthritis. The sample group consisted of 42 older adult with knee osteoarthritis who received treatment at the orthopedic surgery department, Jainad Narendra Hospital. They were divided into an experimental group and a comparison group, 21 people in each group. The instruments used in the experiment was pain management program for older adult with knee osteoarthritis by applying the theory of information, motivation, and skill development of Fisher, Fisher, and Harman. The duration of the experiment was 8 weeks. The instruments used for data collection were a self-care behavior questionnaire, a pain assessment form, and a screening form for the severity of osteoarthritis. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test.
The research results found that 1. After the experiment, the experimental group had better self-care behavior than before the experiment and had lower pain levels and severity of osteoarthritis than before the experiment, with statistical significance at the .05 level. 2. After the experiment, the experimental group had better self-care behavior than the comparison group and had lower pain levels and severity of osteoarthritis than the comparison group, with statistical significance at the .05 level.
