A Model of Surgical Instruments Management for Patients under Cardiovascular and Thoracic Operation with Technology at a Tertiary Hospital

Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to analyze the problems and needs in surgical instrument management, develop a model for surgical instrument management, and evaluate the appropriateness of the developed model in patients undergoing cardiovascular and thoracic surgery in conjunction with the use of developed technology. The study was conducted in the cardiovascular and thoracic operating rooms of a tertiary hospital. The key informants were purposively selected and divided into two groups: (1) 13 healthcare personnel working in the operating room who were interviewed, and (2) six healthcare personnel who evaluated the appropriateness of the developed model. The research instruments consisted of a semi-structured interview guide and an evaluation form for assessing the appropriateness of the developed model, which demonstrated a content validity index of 0.91. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis.
The research findings revealed that: 1) The problems in the management of surgical instruments for cardiovascular and thoracic patients included inadequate storage space, damaged surgical instruments in certain categories, lack of real-time instrument data, insufficient competency among personnel, and unclear communication among staff. The identified need was to address these issues through the integration of technology in surgical instrument management. 2) The surgical instrument management model was developed based on quality assessment in healthcare of Donabedian’s framework, which included structure, process, and outcome components. Finally, 3) the overall appropriateness of the developed model was found to be 91.91%.
