Development of Cognitive Stimulation Program Integrated with Family Participation for Retarding Dementia in Hmong Older Adults

The aim of this study is to develop and study the feasibility of applying the program to Hmong older adults with dementia. The research process consisted of three phases. First phase, 543 Hmong older adults were surveyed and screened about dementia using Thai Mental State Examination (TMSE). Additionally, six community officials were interviewed regarding models of dementia care and prevention. Second phase, researcher reviewed literature and relevant research. Analyzed data were used to create and develop programs, as well as the developed program was consulted with professionals. Third phase, feasibility testing of program was conducted with 3 Hmong older adults, 3 their family members, and 2 community officials. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis, and qualitative data from interviews was analyzed.
The results of the research manifested that 1) older adults in Tak and Phetchabun provinces had dementia 266 and 199 respectively. Nonetheless, community officials explained that they did not have the model of the care and prevention for older adults with dementia. 2) The program was developed and divided into 14 activities. Each activity was performed for 45 to 60 minutes, two times a week as seven weeks totals to retarding dementia 3) The program developed can be effectively used with the Hmong older adults.
