This quasi-experimental study aimed to evaluate the effect of patient-centered care combined with abdominal massage program on constipation in frail older adults in an Orthopedic ward. The sample consisted of 48 patients aged 60 years or older, selected using purposive sampling. The participants were divided into two groups: 24 patients in the experimental group and 24 in the control group. The experimental group received the program for 8 days, while the control group received routine nursing care. The research instruments included screening tools such as the FRAIL scale, Mini-CogTM, and a Constipation Risk Assessment Form. The data collection tools comprised a demographic questionnaire and a Bowel Pattern Assessment Form. The experimental intervention included the patient-centered care combined with abdominal massage program. Additionally, the monitoring tool used was a record-keeping form for bowel movements. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and independent t-tests.
The results revealed that the experimental group had a significantly lower average constipation score after the program compared to before and compared to the control group (p < .05). The findings indicate that the patient-centered care combined with abdominal massage program effectively reduced constipation in frail older adults in an orthopedic ward.
