Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to assess the needs for looking after elderly people living with chronic illnesses. The participants were 34 healthcare personnel, 30 caregivers for the elderly, and 30 elderly people living with chronic illnesses. They were selectively chosen based on specific criteria. Data was collected through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions, using a structured interview format, an assessment tool for care needs of elderly people living with chronic illnesses which designed for healthcare personnel, caregivers and elderly individuals with chronic illnesses. The Cohen’s Kappa coefficients among these instruments were .89, .84, and .84, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, content analysis, and a modified priority needs index. The findings revealed that care needs for elderly individuals with chronic illnesses in the community for each group were divided into three key areas. First, the healthcare personnel desired the highest level of community involvement (PNI modified = 0.352). Second, caregivers needed the most comprehensive guide on elderly care and methods for managing the health conditions affecting the elderly (PNI modified = 0.444). Finally, elderly individuals needed the most effective communication technology for health information that provided alerts tailored to their needs (PNI modified = 0.352). Thus, caring for elderly individuals with chronic illnesses should consider the involvement of all sectors. Health information technology systems that meet needs should be easily accessible. Elderly individuals, caregivers, family members, and community members should be promoted regarding the principles of care and methods for managing health conditions.
