This quasi-experimental research with a two-group pretest-posttest design was aimed at studying the effects of an experiential learning program on knowledge and care practices for patients with uncontrolled hypertension among village health volunteers (VHVs). The sample was 60 village health volunteers divided into an experimental group of 30 village health volunteers and a control group of 30 village health volunteers. The instruments used in the study consisted of: 1) the instrument used in the experiment, which was an experiential learning program; 2) data collection instruments consisting of a hypertension knowledge test form and a questionnaire on care practices for hypertensive patients. The instruments had reliability scores of 0.98, 0.89, and 0.94, respectively. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and reference statistics consisting of independent t-test and paired t-test.
After receiving the program, the experimental group had higher mean scores for knowledge score and care practices for patients with hypertension than before the experiment (p <.001). Furthermore, the experimental group had higher mean scores for knowledge and care practices for patients with hypertension than the control group with statistical significance (p <.001).
This experiential learning program was able to promote village health volunteers’ knowledge about the disease and care for hypertensive patients. Public health personnel can use the program to perform work involving care for patients with uncontrolled hypertension.
