The Effects of an Education and Empowerment Program on Competency Development among Type 2 Diabetes Patients

This quasi-experimental research was a two-group pretest-posttest design. The objective aimed to study and compare the effects of the education and empowerment programs on the development of competencies in patients with type 2 diabetes. The sample group was seventy-six patients with type 2 diabetes were selected by purposive methods by selecting into an experimental group and a control group, 38 people per group. Research instruments were 1) research tools used in the experiment program including a 12-week knowledge and empowerment program, 2) research tools such as personal information questionnaire, diabetes knowledge questionnaire, empowerment questionnaire, and self-efficacy questionnaire. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and t-test.
The research results found that after joining in the program, the experimental group had an average knowledge of diabetes and perception of competencies scores higher than before joining in the program, and higher than the control group with statistically significant level at .05. The accumulated blood sugar level (HbA1C) decreased before joining the program, also significantly better than the control group at the statistically significant level at .05.
