The Relationship between Social Support, Anxiety, Adaptation, and Life Quality of The Elderly People with Low Vision

Abstract

This correlational descriptive research to studied correlations between social support, anxiety, adaptation, and life quality of the elderly people with low vision. The samples consisted of 164 elderly people with low vision, Mueang district in Ratchaburi province. which was chosen through purposive sampling, The tool used as questionnaire personal characteristic form, the social support questionnaire, the anxiety questionnaire, the adaptation to Age-Related Vision Loss (AVL-12) and Elderly Low Vision Quality of Life Questionnaire (ELVQOL). The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and Spearman’s correlation coefficient.
The results showed that had social support, adaptation with defect visibility and life quality of the elderly people with low vision at a high level with (x̅ = 121.59, S.D. = 7.77, x̅ = 21.93, S.D. = 6.59 and x̅ = 39.84, S.D. =9.28, respectively), Anxiety is low level or no anxiety (x̅ = 6.07, S.D. = 2.46). Analysis of the relationship showed that social support and anxiety have positive relationship with life quality of the elderly people with low vision in low level with statistical significance (rs = .240, p< .01 and rs= .359, p< .01, respectively). Adaptation with visual disability found that no relationship with life quality of the elderly people with low vision (rs = -.141, p< .01). The study findings indicate that nurses and health care teams should focus on promoting social support and providing activities to which reduce anxiety develop quality life of among elderly people with low vision.
