Abstract

The purposes of this quasi-experimental study were to test the effects of the Mental Health Literacy (MHL) Program on the psychological well-being and Quality of Life (QoL) of the elderly using two groups, pre-test, post-test, and a 1-month follow-up design. Participants consisted of 62 elderly people who met the inclusion criteria and were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (n = 26) or a control group (n = 26). The experimental group joined the MHL program, while the control group received standard care from the Sub-district Health Promoting Hospital. The research instruments included the MHL program (inter-rater opinion was 0.99), psychological well-being questionnaires, and QoL measurements that were tested with reliability of .94 and .91, respectively. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent t-test, two-way repeated measure ANOVA, and multiple comparison by Bonferroni.
The results revealed that the experimental group had statistically and significantly higher mean scores for psychological well-being and QoL than the control group (p<.05 and p=.001, respectively) at the post-test and 1-month follow-up period. Moreover, the mean scores for psychological well-being and QoL within the experimental group were statistically and significantly different at the pre-test, post-test, and 1-month follow-up period (p<.01).
These findings suggest relevant healthcare personnel could apply this program to enhance psychological well-being and quality of life among the elderly.
