Abstract

Stroke is an acute condition of the neurological system. This illness affects caregivers by decreasing their confidence in the patient’s condition. Therefore, providing care centered on the patient’s family is necessary. The aims of this study were to compare the confidence scores of caregivers using patientand family-centered care developed by the Institute for Patient- and Family-Centered Care combined with Bandura’s self-efficacy theory. A two-group post-test design was used for this quasi-experimental research. The 46 participants were purposively selected. The instruments included the Patient- and Family-Centered Care Program and the Family Caregiver Confidence Scale. The Family Caregiver Confidence Scale demonstrated a content validity index (CVI) of 0.80 and Cronbach’s alpha of 0.88. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square test, and t-test.
The results of this study revealed that: The family caregiver confidence scores in the experimental group who received the program were statistically significantly higher than those in the control group who received standard care predischarge and at the 4-week follow-up period (p < .05). The family caregiver confidence scores at the 4-week follow-up period were statistically significantly higher than those predischarge in the experimental group who received the program. The family caregiver confidence scores at the 4-week follow-up period did not differ from those predischarge in the experimental group who received the program (p < .05). This study’s recommendations were assessed with confidence at the end of the fourth week. Therefore, follow-up should be continued after the fourth week. To assess the confidence scores of long-term family caregivers.
