Effects of a Self-Management Program for Stroke Prevention among At-risk Working Age Patients in Saraburi Province

Abstract

The purposes of this quasi-experimental research was to study the effects of a self-management program for stroke prevention among at-risk working age patients in Saraburi province.
The study population was working age people who were at risk of having a stroke. The sample population was chosen by sample ramdom sampling according to the inclusion criteria and divided into 2 groups of equal size - the experimental and comparison groups. ,each comprising 25 working age people. Two tools were used in this research 1) a self-management program for stroke prevention that was developed based on the self-management form of Creer and used for 8 weeks of training; and 2) a questionnaire on stroke prevention self-management behavior. The content validity of the tool was verified by 5 experts and came out to; CVI 0.97. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of the self-management program for stroke prevention was .94. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, the Wilcoxon match pairs signed rank test, and the Mann-Whitney U test.
The results after the experimental were as follows: 1) after the self-management program for stroke prevention, the stroke prevention behavior and blood pressure of people in the experimental group were better than before participating in the program to a statistically significant degree at the level .05. 2) The self-management for stroke prevention behavior and blood pressure of the experimental group were significantly better than those of the comparison group at the level .05.
