Effects of a Self-management Program for Glycemic Control in Type 2 Diabetes People at Risk of Developing Diabetic Retinopathy in Urban Communities, Mueang District at Nakhon Ratchasima

Diabetic retinopathy is a major complication. It causes abnormalities in vision and blindness. This causes the patient’s quality of life to decrease, resulting in losses both in direct and indirect costs. Study the results of a self-management program to control blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes who are at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy in the city area, Mueang district, Nakhon ratchasima province. Its purpose is to compare cumulative blood sugar levels and self-management to prevent diabetic retinopathy experimental group and comparison group, 36 patients per group, duration 12 weeks. The tools used in the study consisted of 1) a self-management program to control blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes who are at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. Developed under Creer’s self-management framework 2) Self-management questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Frequency distribution, mean, percentage, standard deviation, paired t-test, independent t-test, Wilcoxon signed rank test and Mann-Whitney U test.
The results of the study found that after using the program, the experimental group’s self-management behavior regarding eating, exercise, medication adherence/going to see the doctor as per appointments, stress reduction and overall self-management behavior was significantly better than before using the program and better than the comparison group (p < .05), and it was found that the cumulative blood sugar level in the experimental group was significantly lower than before using the program and lower than the comparison group (p < .05).
