Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative research was to describe the violent behaviors in males who had schizophrenia and amphetamine addiction. 15 key informants participated in this study. The qualitative data were accessed by in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed by content analysis method. Five-main themes emerged from the data’s meaning: 1) The meaning of the violent behaviors based on the views of the patients found as the action with warning signs, cannot be stopped of aggressive mood and action to stop and defense violence. 2) Their violent behaviors included verbal and physical aggression. 3) Internal causes of the violent behaviors included impatience and a perceived inability to control behavior; external causes included arousing words from others, a lack of supportive family relationships, and the use of amphetamine or alcohol. 4) Perceived effects of violent behaviors were their feelings of guilt and regret over physical injuries, insecurity and fear of the other’s reactions, and that life seemed ruined. 5) The informants wanted family members to be aware of the warning signs of violent behavior, wanting others to listen and stop talking, and wishing to have appropriate caring responses.

The findings can be used to raise awareness of harmful internal and external causes of violent behaviors and their perceived effects. Health care providers should develop a community-based violence prevention program for males with schizophrenia and amphetamine addiction.
