Factors Related to The Level of Daily Living Activity among Elderly People Living in Low-cost Apartment

This research aimed to study the level of activity of daily living and its related factors among elderly people living in low-cost apartment, Thung Song Hong, Bangkok using a cross sectional correlational design. The participants in this study comprised 145 elderly people. The instrument included questionnaires for demographic characteristic, health problems, relationship among family member, social support, depression and Barthel’s Activity of Daily living Index. Descriptive statistic was employed for data analysis. Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient and Pearson’s Chi-square test were used to analyze the relationship between studied variables. The study revealed that almost all participants (92.4%) were social bonding elderly people. They were able to perform high level of daily activities with an average score of 18.01 (S.D. = 2.82). Factors related to level of daily activities were age (r = -.844, p <.05), monthly income (r = .180, p <.05), duration of chronic diseases (r = -.176, p <.05) and depression (r = -.274, p <.05). From the results of the study, it is recommended that nurses should encourage elderly people to join in health promotion and disease prevention activities. Depression should be routinely assessed so that early depression management can be performed. Moreover, the preparation program on money saving should be initiated for people who are active in work force. Accordingly, when they become older they can rely on themselves have good quality of life and perform daily activities independently.
