The Relationship Between Occupational Health Literacy and Safety Behavior among Garbage Collectors in City Municipality Siracha District, Chonburi Province

Abstract

Garbage collectors are constantly at risk of accident. This was caused by unsafe behavior. The purposes of this research were to ascertain the relationships between occupational health literacy and safety behavior in 204 garbage collectors in city municipality siracha district, Chonburi province. Recruited by using a proportionate simple random sampling. The research instruments include the safety behavior, access to occupational, training and safety, awareness, occupational and safety education and decision skill. The Cronbach alpha coefficients were 0.86, 0.94, 0.97, 0.76, 0.58 (KR 20) and 0.73 respectively. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation coefficient.
Results revealed that the overall safety behavior of the garbage collectors good level (Mean = 3.02, SD = 0.47). The related safety behavior were decision skill and access to occupational, training and safety at the level of p-value<.001, awareness and occupational and safety education at the level of p-value<.01. Therefore, occupational health nurse and those work for the health should support personal protective equipment, promote decision skills to provide garbage collectors with knowledge and support safety behavior.
