The Effective of The well-being Program on Depressive Symptoms of Schizophrenic Patients

Abstract

This quasi-experimental control with a pretest-posttest measure to examination aimed the effective of the well-being program on depressive symptoms of schizophrenic patients. The sample is schizophrenic patients, receiving services in the inpatient department at a psychiatric hospital of 66 patients. Randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups, with 33 patients in each group. The experimental group participated in the well-being program, whereas the control group received routine nursing care. The research instruments were: 1) the well-being program, and 2) the Depression Assessment in Schizophrenia Thai version, which was content validated by 3 experts, Content validity index of 1.0, a Cronbach alpha coefficient of .83. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test. The research findings were as follows: 1) The mean score for depressive symptoms among the schizophrenia patients in the experimental group after participating in the well-being program (M = 2.2, SD = 1.40) was significantly lower than that before participating in the program (M = 8.6, SD = 2.60) at a statistical significance (t = 15.579, p< .001). 2) The mean difference score for the depressive symptoms among the schizophrenia patients between the pretest and posttest in the experimental group after participating in the well-being program (gif.latex?\small&space;\bar{D}_{1} = 6.4, SD = .41) was significantly different from that of the mean difference score for the depressive symptoms in the control group (gif.latex?\small&space;\bar{D}_{2} = .40, SD = .18) at a statistical significance (t = 13.41, p< .001). The findings of this study that well-being program is able to reduce depression symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. Healthcare providers could use this program as an alternative intervention.
