The Effects of a Self-awareness and Behavioral Skills Development Program on Self-awareness and Repeated Pregnancy Prevention Behaviors in Teenage Mothers, Phetchaburi Province

Abstract

The purpose of this quasi-experimental research was to study the effects of a self - awareness and behavioral skills development program on self-awareness and repeated pregnancy prevention behaviors of teenage mothers in Phetchaburi Province. The sample were 50 teenage mothers (age less than 20) admitted at the postnatal unit of Phetchaburi Hospital, selected by purposive sampling, and they were divided into the experimental (25) and the comparative (25) groups. The research instruments included: 1) a self-awareness and behavioral skills development program which was developed based on the informational motivation behavior skill model and self - awareness theory, The duration of the program was 8 weeks. The activities comprised: (1) developing self-awareness (2) giving information (3) enhancing motivation and (4) developing behavioral skills; and 2) self - awareness and repeated pregnancy preventive behaviors questionnaires. Content validity indexes (CVI) of the questionnaires were .91 and .93 and the reliability scores were .92 and .92, respectively. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and t-test.

The result revealed as follows. After attending the program, self - awareness and repeated pregnancy preventive behaviors of the experimental group were significantly higher than before attending the program, and significantly higher than the comparative group (p<.05).
