Teenagers’ Experiences in Using a Youth Friendly Health Service: A Descriptive Qualitative Research

Abstract

Adolescent-friendly health services focus on providing adolescents to access the services that are related to their youth lifestyle. The aim of this study is to explore the experience of teenagers in the two youth friendly clinics by using the descriptive qualitative research. Data collection is an in-depth interview method. Nine teenagers who received services at two friendly services of Petchaburi province during March-April 2018 were selected by purposive sampling technique. Research tools are the in-depth interview guided questions, and field note. Thematic analysis was used for data collection.

The results showed that the teenagers have expressed feedbacks on the experience of using the youth friendly service in three main themes as following: 1) the types of services provided to adolescents have 3 sub-themes that are focusing on proactive prevention; solving problem before it is too late; Supporting teenagers’ needs, 2) access to friendly services, there are 2 sub-themes: self-reliance; reliance when needed, and 3) Expected service, there are 3 sub-themes: raising awareness, changing attitude; Strengthen the theory and practice; confidentialiality. From the results of this study, nurses need to adjust their attitudes and provide services to support teenagers’ needs.
