Factors predicting electronic cigarette preventive behaviors among secondary school students in Mueang Nakhon Sawan District, Nakhon Sawan Province

Abstract

     This cross-sectional quantitative study aimed to examine e-cigarette prevention behavior and identify predictors of e-cigarette prevention behaviors among secondary school students in Mueang District, Nakhon Sawan Province. The participants were 424 students aged 13-18 years studying in the 2025 academic year, obtained through stratified random sampling. Data were collected via an online questionnaire between August and October 2025. The research instruments included questionnaires on personal factors, perceived factors, cue-to-action factors, and e-cigarette smoking prevention behavior with Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of 0.80, 0.82, and 0.72, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The level of statistical significance was set at 0.05.
     The results indicated that the overall e-cigarette smoking prevention behavior among secondary school students were overall at a high level (Mean = 4.31, S.D. = 0.73). Significant predictors of e-cigarette smoking prevention behaviors were health promotion campaigns or activities ( equation= 0.323, p-value < 0.001), experience related to e-cigarettes ( equation= -0.237, p-value < 0.001), perceived severity of the consequences of e-cigarette use ( equation= 0.212, p-value < 0.001), and perceived barriers to e-cigarette smoking prevention ( equation= 0.091, p-value = 0.037). These variables jointly explained 21.8% of the variance in e-cigarette smoking prevention behavior among secondary school students in Mueang District, Nakhon Sawan Province. Therefore, educational institutions and partner networks should collaborate to foster awareness, cultivate refusal skills, and establish a protective environment to sustainably reduce the risk of e-cigarette use among students.
