Clinical Presentations of Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder in Adults

Objective : To describe clinical presentations of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults who attended medical treatment at Ramathibodi Hospital.
Method : A retrospective descriptive study was conducted by chart reviewing of patients aged 20 years or older who were diagnosed attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. All subjects, both inpatients and outpatients, attended medical treatment at Ramathibodi hospital between January 2011 and December 2015.
Result : The was 126 patients with aged 20 - 61 years (median 25 years). They were 66.7% male and 33.3% female. Most of them sought the medical treatment because of their ADHD symptoms. Inattentive symptoms were predominant, in contrast, hyperactive symptoms were rarely found. More than 40 percentage of subjects had comorbid psychiatric disorders at least 1 disorder. Mood disorders were the most common
comorbid psychiatric disorder. Moreover, 117 subjects (96 %) had diagnostic stability regarding adult ADHD. In terms of medical treatment immediate - release Methylphenidate was commonly prescribed by physician as first choice of treatment.
Conclusion : ADHD is an important mental health problem in adult, especially young adult. Male was more predominant than female. Inattentive symptoms were major concern
that most patients sought for their medical treatment. In addition, more than 40 percentage of subjects had at least 1 comorbid psychiatric disorders.
