Abstract

Objective: This predictive correlational research aimed to determine predicting factors of behaviors for substance abuse in junior high school students in one district of Nakhon Ratchasima Province.

Methods: This correlational research aimed to predict risk behaviors of substance abuse in junior high school students. The research instruments included measures of self-control for high school students and risk behaviors for substance abuse in junior high school students. Cronbach's alpha coefficients for internal reliability were 0.89 and 0.72, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis.

Results: The sample comprised 371 junior high school students in one district of Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Thailand. The results showed that risk behaviors of substance abuse in junior high school students were associated with five variables of self-control: self-control in work performance (r=.354, p<.001), self-control from stimulation (r=.267, p<.001), self-control in emotions (r=.431, p<.001), self-control in interpersonal relationships (r=.429, p<.001), and self-control with ethics (r=.267, p<.001). In the regression model, three self-control variables predicted risk behaviors of substance abuse in junior high school students, accounting for 29.9% of the variance (R2=.299). These three variables were self-control in emotional aspects (R2 change=.186), self-control in work performance (R2 change=.095), and self-control in interpersonal relationships (R2 change=.019)

Conclusion: These results could be used to help design activities or develop programs to prevent risk behaviors for substance abuse in junior high school students by promoting self-control in emotional aspects, work performance, and interpersonal relationships.
