Abstract

Objective : To highlight depression prevention in adolescents by lesson distilled of research
and development of multimedia for preventing Thai teenage depression.
Methods : Qualitative research study design was conducted. Twenty-eight key informants
included 16 adolescents, 6 teachers, and 6 experts living in the selected area of northern
Thailand who volunteered to participate in this research. This research using knowledge
underpinning of participatory depression prevention (PDP) model for Thai adolescents and
perspectives of participants, as well as, tacit knowledge of experts in caring for children and
adolescents with depression, behavioral and emotional problems. The data were collected by
group discussions and reflections during the process of multimedia development and after
the production completed then analyzed through content analysis.
Results : The findings revealed that depression prevention in adolescents beginning with
1) awareness of depression risk, 2) taking care, and 3) self-worth enhancement. Adolescents,
parents and teachers is ability to observe characteristic of depression risks in order to
cooperative taking care adolescent at risk with effective communication for improve
understanding, acceptance, and support, as well as, self-worth enhancement. These will lead
to collaborate solving problem, promote positive feelings, and reduce the risk of depression.
Additionally, the lessons learned during the process of multimedia development, the
participants appreciate sharing their experiences of co-team-working to prevent depression
throughout development of an e-book and 2 short movies. They can discover their potentially,
friendship, sharing, and happiness work together for social. They can applicable the
multimedia to guide depression risks assessment and caring for adolescent at risk to depression.
Conclusion : Adolescents, parents, and teachers can utilize the multimedia and findings as
guidelines for depression prevention by themselves. Mental health care providers can apply
the multimedia to enhance awareness regarding depression prevention in adolescents, guide
their clients to prevent depression in adolescents.
