Epigenetic modification มี ความ สำคัญ ต่อ การ ควบคุม transcription ของ ยีนส์ รวม ทั้ง การ เกิด มะเร็ง
ตัวอย่าง ของ epigenetic modification ที่ ได้รับ ความ สนใจ มาก ใน ปัจจุบัน ได้แก่ การ เกิด hypermethylation ของ
ยีนส์ที่ ควบคุม การ เติบโต ของ เซลล์ เช่น tumor suppressor genes ยีนส์ที่ ควบคุม การ เกิด apoptosis และ cell cycle
เช่น  p15ink4b ซึ่ง เป็น cell-cycle-dependent kinase inhibitor ผล ที่ ตาม มา คือ เกิด disease progression ใน มะเร็ง
บาง ชนิด เช่น AML และ MDS Hypomethylating agents ได้แก่ azacitidine และ decitabine เป็น ยา ที่ มี การ
นำ มา ใช้ได้ ผล ดี ใน ปัจจุบัน
