Abstract :
The purpose of this experimental research was to determine the effect of relaxation training
and music istening on reducing anxiety and faintness in first-time donors. The samples were 104 firsttime
donors who donated blood at National Blood Center. These were divided into three experimental
groups and one control group, then being 26 donors in each group. The different experimental groups
received music listening or relaxation training or both relaxation training and music listening. Relaxation
training and music listening were not given to the control group. The instruments used to
measure anxiety and faintness were the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the State Blood -
Injection Symptom Scale (SBISS). The data were compared pre-post test scores and analyzed by using
Anova and Scheffe’ test from computer program SPSS. The results indicated that first-time donors
with relaxation training the anxiety scores and faintness scores after experimental were significantly
lower than before the experimental (p < 0.01). Music listening could reduced only anxiety in first-time
donors. These results suggested that relaxation training and music listening can be widely used in
the other blood centers for reducing anxiety and adverse reactions in donors. It is easy to use and costeffective.
It also appends to encourage repeat blood donation.
