Abstract:
Iron deficiency in school children is still a serious public health issue of Thailand since it
is consequently of poor growth and neurocognitive impairment. We assessed the prevalence of iron
deficiency among 185 Chiangmai College of Dramatic Arts school children who had a risk of iron
deficiency in order to diet for their image. By using serum iron level together with percent transferrin
saturation level less than 50 μg/dL and 16%, respectively are index for iron deficiency, we found that
17.30% of them were deficient in iron which was classified as follows: 14.55% of male and 18.46% of
female. The highest prevalence of iron deficiency was observed in the group of 15-16 years old female
at 25.00% of this population. Thus, the consultation for changing the consumption behavior and iron
supplementation for prevention and control iron deficiency should be performed to these children.
