Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST)

Abstract:

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the
digestive  tract. The disease is rare in children. These tumors span a wide clinical spectrum from
benign  to malignant and have been long recognized for their nearly absolute resistance to chemotherapy
and radiation  treatment. At present, surgery is the standard treatment for primary respectable GIST.
A major break  through is the development of the new class of cancer agent targeting tumor specific
molecular abnormalities. Primary results on administration of imatinib mesylate, a signal transduction
inhibitor, are  particularly encouraging. Molecular targeting of the critical pathogenetic mechanism
underlying GIST  is not only revolutionize strategy to treat locally advanced and metastatic GIST but also
improve disease  control after macroscopically radical surgery. A case of GIST in children, who has
been disease  free for 3 years after the tumor resection is reported.
