Abstract:
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the
digestive tract. The disease is rare in children. These tumors span a wide clinical spectrum from
benign to malignant and have been long recognized for their nearly absolute resistance to chemotherapy
and radiation treatment. At present, surgery is the standard treatment for primary respectable GIST.
A major break through is the development of the new class of cancer agent targeting tumor specific
molecular abnormalities. Primary results on administration of imatinib mesylate, a signal transduction
inhibitor, are particularly encouraging. Molecular targeting of the critical pathogenetic mechanism
underlying GIST is not only revolutionize strategy to treat locally advanced and metastatic GIST but also
improve disease control after macroscopically radical surgery. A case of GIST in children, who has
been disease free for 3 years after the tumor resection is reported.
