Abstract:
Objective: The purpose of this research is to study the performance of a new automated blood cell separator
Trima Accel (Gambro BCT Inc., Lakewood, CO, USA) compared with the MCS Plus (Haemonetics, Braintree, MA,
USA), t hata reu sedf orr outinea pheresisp lateletsl eukocytesr educed. M aterialsa ndM ethods:P lateletpheresisw as
collected from the same donor using the same group of 30 donors for each machine. The target platelet yields were
set at 4.0x 1011 platelets. Following the procedures, plateletpheresis data were compared in terms of platelet yields,
collection efficiency (CE), processing times and residual leukocyte counts. The study was carried out at
Hemapheresis Unit, the National Blood Centre, Thai Red Cross Society, during January 17, 2006 to May 30, 2006.
Platelets were counted with an automated blood cell counter (Coulter Counter T-890, Coulter Electronics, England)and
residual leukocytes were counted with flow cytometry (FACScan, Becton Dickinson, USA). Results: In this study,
comparison of plateletpheresis characteristics revealed that platelet yield was significantly higher for Trima Accel
thanfor MCS Plus (p = 0.003) and the CE of Trima Accel was higher than MCS Plus (p = 0.06). Additionally, Trima
Accel had significantly (p < 0.001) shorter processing times by an average of 15 minutes than MCS Plus. Regarding
leukoreduction, all plateletpheresis units obtained from both machines had fewer than 1x106 white blood cells except
one unit prepared by Trima Accel. No severe reactions occured during and after procedure for both studies. Conclusion:
Trima Accel processes more efficiency and faster than MCS Plus. Apheresis platelets leukocytes reduced
complies well with current US and European standards.
