Abstract :

Repeated blood donations can deplete body iron stores, particularly in women. Iron supplement may improve  hemoglobin (Hb) level in blood donors although this is not given routinely. Objective : The aim of this study is  to test an efficacy of iron supplement (ferrous sulfate, iron element 65 mg/tablet) once daily for 30 days to increase hemoglobin  (Hb) level in repeated female donors and to compare Hb measurement by HemoCue to by the electronic cell counter. Method : Volunteers were divided into 2 groups, donors receiving iron supplement with ferrous sulfate
65  mg once daily for 30 days and donors who do not received iron supplement. Blood samples were collected at the end  of donation and analyzed for hemoglobin (Hb) Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and  mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) and were collected and measured again at the next donation, 3 months afterwards. Results : Hemoglobin levels  of volunteers receiving iron supplement (200 female) and of volunteers who do not received iron supplement (200  female) were 11.9± 0.9 g/dL and 11.9± 0.8 g/dL, respectively. Three months afterwards, 62 participants (age 18-
60  years) receiving iron supplement and 60 participants (age 19-57 years) who did not receive iron supplement presented for follow up. Red blood cell parameters of the group receiving iron supplement increased significantly: Hb from  12.0± 0.9 g/dL to 13.1±1.0 g/dL, MCV from 7.6±6.2 fL to 88.6±6.5 fL, and MCH from 26.7± 2.6 pg to 28.4±2.5 pg. The hemoglobin level of the group not receiving iron supplement increased significantly from 11.9± 0.7 g/dL to 12.4± 0.9 g/dL. MCV and MCH were non significantly different: MCV from 86.6± 4.8 fL to 87.0± 5.2 fL, and MCH from 28.0± 2.8 pg to 27.5± 2.0 pg. The hemoglobin from venous blood determined  by HemoCue compared to by the electronic cell counter,T echniconH *3, Bayer showed a good linear r elation o fr = 0 .915, p < 0 .01. C onclusion : We concluded  that 30 ferrous sulfate tablets for 30 days are useful for repeated donors to improve the quality of their blood and  HemoCue is useful as a screening test prio to donation.
