Efficacy of Corticosteroid on Thrombocytopenia in DHF

Abstract

Objective: To study elficacy of corticosteroid in treatment of thrombocytopenia in DHF. Study design: Randomized control trials. Subject: Sixty three dengue hemorrhagic fever patients, aged 15-45 years, admitted in Vaira Hospital from July 199998 to January 1999. Methods: Sixty three DHF patients were randomly divided into two groups one group received dexamethasone for three days, another did not. CBC, platelet count and blood pressure were measured for three days discharge. Main outcome measures: Companson of platelet number increment between two groups of denque hemorthagic fever patients for three days. Result: The number of platelet was significanthyincreased in patients who received steroid on second day (18137.93+33792.14/mm') and third day (633307.69土63422.8/mmm') after treated as compared with the control group (p = 0.031 and 0.003 respectively), but not significandy at the first 24 hours after tment. Conclusion: Corticosteroid increase platelet number in dengue hemorthagic fever after treated 48 hours and achieved nornal level within 3 days.
