Incidence of Pulmonary Embolism After Hemiarthroplasty of Hip

Abstract: The incidence of pulmonary embolism in fracture hip patients after hemiarthroblasty was investigated prosplectively. Each patient had preoperative perfusion lung scan and postoperative perfusion lung scan on the seventh postoperative day. Pulmonary embolish was diagnosed by perfusion lung defect. In this study 20 patients undergoing elective hip hemiarthroplasty. Pulmonary embolism was identified in 1 of 20 patients (5%) and it was asymptomatic pulmonary embolism and
no fatal pulmonary embolism was identified. Risk factors for developing pulmonary embolism was old age (> 60 yrs.) and varicose vein.
