Abstract

The objective of this quasi-experimental study was to examine the effects of pharmaceutical care in
patients with dyspepsia at a community pharmacy in Mahasarakham by comparing severity and frequency,
knowledge about dyspepsia scores and quality of life scores between study group (received
pharmaceutical care) and control group (received regular pharmacy service) between January and
February 2008. Sixty-two patients with dyspepsia were divided into 2 groups; 32 patients in the study
group and 30 patients in the control group. No significant difference was found in patientsû characteristics
between groups. The most common DRP was drug noncompliance, before (81.3% in study group and
90.0% in control group), and after pharmaceutical care (43.8% in study group and 93.3% in control
group). When comparing with the control group, the severity and the frequency of dyspepsia symptoms in
the study group were significantly decreased after pharmaceutical care was given (p<0.001). The
knowledge scores and the quality of life scores of the study group were significant higher than the control
group (p<0.001). Pharmaceutical care in dyspepsia patients could help to decrease drug related
problems, severity, and frequency of dyspepsia, and increase patientûs knowledge of disease and quality
of life scores.
