Knowledge, Attitude and Participation of Medical Staffs in Hazardous Waste Management Guideline in the State University’s Hospital

Abstract

Introduction: Chemical hazardous waste in hospitals affects the health of workers involved and It causes soil, water and air pollution. Therefore, effective management of hazardous waste involves serious cooperation from all parties, from executives to practitioners. The purpose of the research is to study the level of knowledge, attitude and participation of medical staffs in hazardous waste management guideline in the state university’s hospital. Material and method: The affecting factors included personal and social variables. Questionnaires were distributed to 278 medical staffs in the state university’ hospital and data was analyzed by using percentage, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, t-test, one-way analysis of variance. Results: The results found that the medical staffs in the state university’s hospital had knowledge in hazardous waste management guideline at medium level. The knowledge of medical staffs in the state university’s hospital with different gender working duration education levels and position was statistically significantly different at the 0.05 level. The medical staffs in the state university’s hospital had attitude in hazardous waste management guideline at medium level. An attitude of medical staffs in the state university’ hospital with different working duration education levels and position was statistically significantly different at the 0.05 level and they participation at medium level. Participation of medical staffs in the state university’s hospital with different gender education levels position working duration and awareness in information about hazardous waste was statistically significantly different at the 0.05 level. Conclusion: Suggestions for guidance for hazardous waste management in the hospital should provide the knowledge and attitude and promote participation about the management of hazardous waste to the medical staffs and professional staffs who work with hospitals by radio line promotion, publish brochure or manual to staff at all department, training, workshop, work observation. Those activities should be operated consistently and seriously to enhance their knowledge and personnel skill about hazardous waste management in hospital.
