แม้อัตราการตั้งครรภ์ในวัยรุ่นทั่วโลกจะลดลง แต่ในประเทศไทยพบวัยรุ่นเริ่มมีพฤติกรรมทางเพศเร็วขึ้นและส่วนใหญ่มีคู่นอนมากกว่าหนึ่งคน ซึ่งยังขาดความรู้ที่เพียงพอต่อการป้องกันการตั้งครรภ์จึงนำไปสู่การตั้งครรภ์ที่ไม่พร้อม การทำแท้ง และโรคติดต่อทางเพศสัมพันธ์ การใช้วิธีการคุมกำเนิดที่มีประสิทธิภาพจึงเป็นพื้นฐานสำคัญในการป้องกันการตั้งครรภ์ในวัยรุ่น ประเทศไทยมีการขับเคลื่อนด้วยยุทธศาสตร์การป้องกันและแก้ไขปัญหาการตั้งครรภ์วัยรุ่นระดับชาติ พ.ศ. 2560 - 2669 พยาบาลมีบทบาทสำคัญในการขับเคลื่อนนโยบายดังกล่าวโดยการเพิ่มความรู้ ความเข้าใจ รวมถึงการให้คำปรึกษา ส่งเสริมการตัดสินใจเลือกวิธีการคุมกำเนิด จึงต้องพัฒนาความรู้เกี่ยวกับการคุมกำเนิดที่ถูกต้องและทันต่อการเปลี่ยนแปลง เพื่อเพิ่มอัตราการคุมกำเนิดในกลุ่มวัยรุ่นที่มีพฤติกรรมเสี่ยงทางเพศ และให้วัยรุ่นได้เข้าถึงบริการคุมกำเนิดอย่างถูกต้องและเหมาะสม
