Abstract

This qualitative research aimed 1) to explore the perception of mothers regarding the meaning and impact of preterm birth and the low birth weight of their child and 2) to examine the mothers' hopes based on their lived experiences. The participants were ten mothers of newborns that were admitted to two provincial hospitals through purposive sampling. Data were collected by in-depth interviews and were simultaneously analyzed throughout the research period. The data used content analysis based on Colozi’s method. Then, data saturation was ascertained when interviewing the tenth mother.

The research revealed that the hopes of mothers regarding low birth weight premature infants had two main findings. First, regarding the mothers' perception and impact of preterm birth and low birth weight: 1.1 the perception of preterm birth meant delivering a baby before the medically designated date; low birth weight; and 1.2 the perception of low birth weight premature infants affects both the infant's health and maternal mental health. Second, regarding the mothers' hopes for their low birth weight preterm infants, 2.1 all of the participants expressed hopes that their infants would be healthy and receive quality healthcare services; 2.2 the factors contributing to hope included confidence in the healthcare team, medical advancement, the positive responses of infants to treatment, and emotional support; 2.3 the characteristics of hopeful mothers included having a sense of empowerment, having mental stability, and having positive social relationships; 2.4 the positive outcomes of maternal hope included strengthened mental resilience, self-care, lifestyle adjustments, maternal roles, and future life planning.

This study provides foundational information for further research and the development of programs to promote hope and encouragement for mothers facing the challenges of preterm birth and low birth weight.
