Abstract

The objectives of this descriptive research were to study the health promotion lifestyles, and self-development needs of the elderly. The samples consisted of 369 people, aged 60 - 69 years. The sample size was calculated using Taro Yamane's formula. This research used stratified and simple random sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires which was the index of item objective congruence (IOC) ranging from .60 to 1.00. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for elderly well-being was .95, for self-improvement needs was .93, and for health-promoting lifestyles was .97. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Pearson's product moment correlation coefficient.

The results showed that the elderly had a high level of overall well-being (M = 3.92). The overall health-promoting lifestyle was also at a high level (M = 3.72). Overall self-improvement needs were moderate (M = 3.23). The aspect with the greatest need for personal development was training, as well as social and spiritual well-being.
