Abstract

This qualitative research was conducted to explore the experience of healthcare professionals when providing care for the ethnics elderly with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Purposive sampling was used to recruit 15 healthcare professionals who had caring experience for ethnic elderly with type 2 diabetes for 5 year or above. Data were gathered using in-depth interviews and the content analysis method was used to analyze all interviews.

Three theme categories emerged that shed light on healthcare professionals’ experiences: 1) Ethnic elderly including the lack of knowledge, language barriers, and different lifestyle. 2) Healthcare professionals which are the disproportionate healthcare workforce and the focusing on treatment rather than health promotion, 3) community-healthcare service including the accessible health services and the lack of community-health care system.

The findings of this study provided a deep understanding of caring for the ethnic elderly with T2DM from the perspective of healthcare professionals in specific areas. It could develop a community- based healthcare system for ethnic elderly with T2DM, which applies to their problems and context.
