ภาวะหลอดเลือดแดงใหญ่โป่งพองในช่องท้อง หมายถึง ภาวะที่หลอดเลือดแดงใหญ่มีขนาดใหญ่กว่าปกติมากกว่า 1.5 เท่า หรือขนาดมากกว่า 3 เซนติเมตร แบ่งออกเป็น 3 ประเภท คือ Infrarenal, Juxtarenal, และ Suprarenal ตามตำแหน่งที่มีการโป่งพองเทียบกับเส้นเลือดแดงของไต ในปัจจุบันมีการรักษาภาวะหลอดเลือดแดงใหญ่โป่งพองแบ่งเป็นการรักษาแบบผ่าตัดเปิดหน้าท้องและการผ่าตัดด้วยการสวนหลอดเลือดซึ่งจะทำการผ่าตัดเมื่อขนาดของเส้นเลือดที่โป่งพองใหญ่กว่า 5.5 เซนติเมตรในผู้ชาย และ 5 เซนติเมตรในผู้หญิง หรือเส้นเลือดโป่งพองมีขนาดใหญ่ขึ้นมากกว่า 1 เซนติเมตรต่อปี หรือเมื่อผู้ป่วยมีอาการ หรือมีเส้นเลือดโป่งพองแบบ saccular type ประกอบกับการผ่าตัดด้วยการสวนหลอดเลือดในปัจจุบันมีหลากหลายรูปแบบ แต่ละรูปแบบมีข้อดี ข้อเสีย และมีความเหมาะสมกับผู้ป่วยที่แตกต่างกัน การเลือกใช้การผ่าตัดรักษาแต่ละรูปแบบจึงขึ้นอยู่กับสภาพร่างกายและสรีรวิทยาของเส้นเลือดแดงใหญ่ของผู้ป่วยเป็นหลัก และหลังการผ่าตัดต้องมีการตรวจติดตามอย่างสม่ำเสมอไปตลอดชีวิต เนื่องจากมีโอกาสการเกิดภาวะแทรกซ้อนหลังการผ่าตัดได้
