TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT APPROACH FOR HEAD NURSES AT POLICE GENERAL HOSPITAL

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to: 1) investigate the components of transformational leadership characteristics of head nurses at Police General Hospital; 2) study the level of transformational leadership characteristics of the head nurses and 3) develop an approach to improve the head nurses’ transformational leadership characteristics. The sample consisted of 250 registered nurses at Police General Hospital. The research instruments included a form for semi-structured interviews, a checklist form, and open questions with Cronbach’s alpha coefficient reliability of .99. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, exploratory factor analysis, and content analysis.

The research results were as follows:

1. The transformational leadership components for head nurses at Police General Hospital consisted of 4 categories: 1) professional management, 2) sincerity, 3) happy workplace, and 4) learning organization.

2. Overall, the transformational leadership characteristics of the head nurses were at a high level.

3. The development of transformational leadership characteristics of the head nurses: 1) The professional management aspect consisted of 11 components: training, study visit, seminar, self-study, reward, two–way communication, coaching, mentoring, SWOT analysis, good governance (integrity, transparency, and accountability), and benchmarking. 2) The sincerity aspect consisted of 6 components: training need, coaching, role model, reward, integrity, and good governance (participation). 3) The learning organization aspect consisted of 7 components: routine to research (R2R), innovation, training, knowledge management, share and learn, empowerment, and team development. And 4) the happy workplace aspect consisted of 5 components: welfare (recreation and meals), good governance (accountability, participation, integrity, and effectiveness and efficiency), positive thinking, participation in network multidisciplinary, and empowerment.
