The Needs of Care for the Elderly and Their Caregivers in the Community

This qualitative research aimed to study the situation, understanding, and needs of care for the elderly and their caregivers in the community. The participants consisted of 15 representatives, including members of the Village Health Volunteer Committee, members of the Sub-district Administrative Organization, public health officers from district health offices, community hospitals, sub-district health promoting hospitals, religious leaders, village committee representatives, representatives of the elderly club, and family members of the elderly. They were in Ko Proet Sub-district, Laem Sing District, Chanthaburi Province. The research instruments consisted of the researchers and the semi-structured interview questions. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observation from December 2023 to February 2024. Data were analyzed using content analysis.
The research results revealed that data collected through in-depth interviews were categorized into two main themes: 1) The need for holistic care, encompassing four aspects: physical, mental/emotional and behavioral, social and environmental, and emergency response and situation management; 2) Community involvement in care, comprising two aspects: existing community care systems and community policies related to elderly care.
This research suggests that agencies related to elderly care should use the findings to serve as a guideline for developing various programs, such as a three-generation family care program for the elderly through community participation.
