Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to study the recurrence of patients with bipolar disorders in Suan Prung Psychiatric Hospital, Chiang Mai Province. The samples consisted of 66 patients with bipolar disorders who returned to admit in the in-patient department at Suan Prung Hospital. The research instruments included the personal information questionnaire and the factors related to recurrence of bipolar disorder assessment form with reliability as .85. Data were collected from November to December, 2019. Statistics used for data analysis included frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation.

The research results revealed that factors related to recurrence of bipolar disorder were as follows: 1) forgetting to take medicine during the period of treatment at home; 2) insomnia; 3) fear of their own illness; 4) guilt feeling about suffering of their family members; 5) being anxiety disorders together with bipolar disorders; 6) stress; 7) low self-esteem due to their illness; 8) easy irritability; 9) fear of social rejection; 10) emotional lability; and 11) drinking energy drinks and coffee.

This research suggests that psychiatric nurses should provide knowledge regarding illness and treatment, enhance adequate sleep, practice emotions management, and advice to avoid drinking energy drinks and coffee for patients with bipolar disorders. This helps prevent the recurrence among these patients.
