Abstract

Diabetes insipidus (DI) is a disease that can be found in dogs. DI is characterized by polydipsia and polyuria with hypotonic urine. DI is classified into two main types: AVP-D (CDI) and AVP-R (NDI). Diagnosis of DI has been based on the modified water deprivation test and AVP response test. Desmopressin is recommended as the first-line treatment for AVP-D owing to its nature in AVP deficiency. Alternatively, thiazide diuretics can also be used. Treatment of both primary and secondary AVP-R (NDI) with desmopressin is not always effective because the reduced renal response to AVP. Therefore, thiazide diuretics such as chlorothiazide is currently recommended and may be used in combination with amiloride to reduce the risk of hypokalemia. The purpose of this review article is to provide the up-to-date information about the causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of diabetes insipidus in dogs
