Are Cattle the Resistant Host For Toxoplasma gondii Infection?
Main Article Content
Abstract
Toxoplasma gondii can infect to all mammals, sheep is considered to be the most important host since T.gondii infection can cause abortion and many reproductive disorders. In contrary, cattle are considered to be the resistant host of T.gondii since they can be infected with T.gondii but the infection does not result to clinical disease or abortion as in sheep. Moreover beef meat is not thought to be the source of T.gondii infection in human because of the difficulty to isolate the parasite from their tissue samples even from the experimental inoculated cattle while T.gondii can be isolated from many other animal tissues. However, many reports indicated that the strain, the infection dose and the enter route of T.gondii affected the disease outcomes in those inoculated cattle. The role of cattle in epidemiology of T.gondii infection is still unclear. This paper reviews that if T.gondii can cause disease or any clinical illness in cattle and if T.gondii transmission caused by beef meat consumption is important to public health.
