Factors Predicting Human Papilloma Virus Vaccine Uptake of High School Female Students, Bangkok Metropolis

Abstract

This case control retrospective study aimed to identify factors predicting the uptake of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine among high school female students in Bangkok Metropolitan area. The concept of Health Belief Model of Becker (1974) was used as a conceptual framework. The sample are divided into 2 groups: 1) a control group consisted of 290 parents of senior high school female students who have not received the HPV vaccine, 2) a study group consisted of 110 parents of senior high school female students who have received the HPV vaccine at least one shot. Five schools were selected. Then 3 classrooms from each Mathayom 4, 5 and 6 of each school were randomly selected, and lots has 9 classrooms total 45 classrooms. The research tools consisted of questionnaires. Data were respectively analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, independent t- test, and model logistic regression.

The findings showed that 3 factors significantly predicted the Human Papilloma Virus vaccine uptake of high school female students in Bangkok Metropolitan area (p < .05).They were perceived severity of cervical cancer (OR = 2.98), perceived benefits of HPV (OR = 2.60) and perceived barriers to HPV vaccine (OR = 0.22).
