Promoting Early Childhood Development for Children Aged 0-5 Years through Play Activities: Applying Pender’s Health Promotion Theory

Abstract

Promoting the development of early childhood children is a challenging and independent role for public health personnel in Thailand. Currently, there are still issues with children aged 0-5 years showing signs of developmental delays. According to the Department of Health, Ministry of Public Health, in 2023, it was found that 22.52% of children assessed for development using the Developmental Surveillance and Promotion Manual (DSPM) exhibited concerns regarding delayed development. However, the caregiving behaviors of caregivers and the amount of time spent playing are crucial factors that affect children’s development. Barriers to promoting child development by caregivers include limited time for children and a lack of knowledge in effectively organizing play activities. For children, playing is the process of learning that enables them to develop essential skills in all areas and experience joy and fun. Therefore, nurses play a vital role in monitoring, screening, and promoting child development, focusing on encouraging appropriate caregiving behaviors so that children receive developmental support through effective play activities.


This article aimed to propose guidelines for promoting child development through play activities by applying Pender’s Health Promotion Theory to achieve sustainable behavioral outcomes among caregivers in supporting child development.
