Abstract

The purposes of this research were to 1) describe health literacy, self-care behaviors, and glycemic control and 2) examine the correlations among those three variables. Three hundred and seventy-five persons were recruited by following the inclusion criteria and a purposive sampling method. Research instruments consisted of set 1, the Personal Data Record Form; set 2, the Diabetes Health Literacy Questionnaire; and set 3, the Self-care Behaviors Questionnaire of type 2 diabetes people. The questionnaire sets 2 and 3 had a content validity index of .96 and .95, respectively and reliability of .85 and .73, respectively. Descriptive statistics and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient were used to analyse data.

The results revealed that: 1) the samples’ health literacy level in all components was at a high level (77.80%), the samples’ self-care behaviors level in all components was at a moderate level (77.60%), and the samples could control blood sugar as good (47.70%). 2) The health literacy of samples was positively correlated to self-care behaviors and glycemic control with statistically significant level of .01 (rs = .354 and .172, respectively). Results of this study indicate that promoting adequate health literacy in type 2 diabetes people will lead to correct self - care behaviors, and leads to good control blood sugar level.
