Caring for Brain-Death Organ Donors: The Nurse’s Roles

Abstract
Nurses who provide care for an organ donor who is brain dead play an important role in ensuring that donated organs remain functional and have quality comparable to normal pre-implantation. Their fore, this article aims to illustrate of the nursing roles in caring for an organ donor brain dead patient. It would be useful for nurses to apply the article for a guideline in providing care for an organ donor brain death patient especially in the hospital setting. The content of this article covers the meaning and diagnosis of brain death, the criteria for selecting organ donors with brain death, the qualification of organ donors for tissue transplantation, and nursing cares for an organ donor brain death patient in the pre-donation care, intra-donation care, and post-donation care. To uphold the human dignity of brain-death donors and their families, as well as the availability of organs from brain-death donors to dedicate to the next recipients.
