Abstract

This quasi-experimental research with two-group pretest-posttest design aimed to study the effects of insomnia management program on insomnia severity and sleep quality of nursing students. The sample consisted of 52 first-to-third year nursing students who were selected and equally divided into a control group and an experimental group. The control group received regular care. The experimental group received a 4-week insomnia management program. The content validity index (CVI) was .90. Data were collected during the first, fourth, and eighth weeks according to the insomnia severity index and Thai Pittsburgh sleep quality index. The reliability was .97 and .80, respectively. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and t-test.

The results revealed that the mean score of insomnia severity among the experimental group who received insomnia management program was significantly lower than the control group receiving only standard care (t-test = 4.970, p-value < .05), and significantly lower than the pre-intervention (t-test = 7.239, p-value < .05). Furthermore, the mean score of sleep quality among the experimental group was significantly higher than the control group receiving only standard care (t-test = 6.609, p-value < .05), and significantly higher than the pre-intervention (t-test = 6.775, p-value < .05). The findings of this research demonstrated that the effects of insomnia management program on insomnia severity and sleep quality reduced the severity of insomnia and increased sleep quality. Therefore, this program should be applied to insomnia management in nursing and undergraduate students.
