Abstract

This quasi-experimental research aimed to compare the protective factor scores on drug use behavior in junior high school students before and after receiving the interpersonal psychotherapy program and compare the protective factor scores on drug use behavior among the experimental group who received the interpersonal psychotherapy program with the control group who received standard care. The sample consisted of 24 primary school students. Purposive sampling with inclusion criteria was used to recruit 12 participants into each group. The experimental group received a 5-week interpersonal psychotherapy program which was developed based on the concept of Weissman and Klerman. The control group received regular care. Data were collected at 1- and 5-week period and follow-up action was repeated at 4 weeks. The tools used were personal data questionnaires and a questionnaire on adolescents' protective factors for drug use behavior. The instrument was verified for a content validity index and reliability which were .78 and .86, respectively. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, t-test statistics, and re-measured one-way ANOVA.

The findings showed that the experimental group had a statistically higher protective factor score on drug use behavior than before receiving the interpersonal psychotherapy program (F = 137.58). Furthermore, the experimental group had a statistically higher protective factor score than the control group (F = 15.64). After four weeks of attending the program, the experimental group had higher scores on preventive factors related to drug use behavior than the control group. The results of this study demonstrated that the interpersonal psychotherapy group program could help junior high school students avoid substance abuse by enhancing their protective factors.
