Abstract

Reflective thinking skills allow students to develop critical thinking skills, and abilities. It is an intellectual growth that helps students enhance connective knowledge in everyday life. In order to improve critical thinking skills in nursing, nursing students were encouraged to assess their issue analysis from the service receivers both in clinical setting and the community. The purpose of this study was to present a model for developing nursing students' critical thinking skills through reflection in the context of elderly nursing practice using the Gibbs concept. The results showed that students gained more rational thinking and problem-solving abilities, particularly during the reflection practice in assessing health status of the elderly in the community. This enabled students to identify and address problems in order to plan for health promotion and nursing innovations that holistically addressed the health needs of the elderly. As a result, this reflective pattern should be used on a regular basis for both individual and group reflection to help students improve their analytical thinking skills for future practical work.
