Effects of Older Adults’ Potential Development with Self-Care Participation Program on Chronic Kidney Disease Prevention in Ubon Ratchathani Province
Main Article Content
Abstract
This quasi-experimental research aimed to compare self-care behaviors on chronic kidney disease (CKD) prevention and clinical examinations of an experimental group and a comparison group before and after receiving the program. The sample consists of 38 socially-bound older adults, and purposive sampling with inclusion criteria was used to recruit 19 participants into each group. An experimental group received the potential development with self-care participation for four weeks, including nutritional knowledge, stress management, exercise, and self-care practices. A comparison group lived an everyday life. Data collection was in the first and fourth weeks with the self-care CKD prevention questionnaire. The instrument was verified for a content validity index and reliability of .76 and .81, respectively. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, paired sample t-test, and independent-sample t-test.
The findings revealed as the followings. The mean score of an experimental group's self-care behaviors was significantly higher than before receiving the program and a comparison group at the significant level of (p-value < .05). The mean systolic blood pressure score in both groups was higher than before receiving the program. An experimental group's mean diastolic blood pressure score decreased while a comparison group increased. The mean score of body mass index and blood sugar levels decreased in both groups. The findings of this study can be guided to gerontological nursing practice in promoting self-care behaviors with participation and can apply to a routine life for preventing CKD further.
